Claire Delmar

NAU is a contemporary Australian design brand, established in 2017 by Richard Munao (founder and director of Cult Design) offering furniture, lighting and accessories by a collective of Australia’s most spirited designers. Studio CD was tasked with bringing the new campaign to life, highlighting the unique, contemporary forms and nature-inspired colour palette of each highly collectable piece.

The new collection was launched recently at Design Show.

Lincoln by Adam Goodrum (pictured above), is a new sofa collection that channels the practical prestige and luxurious functionality synonymous with the Lincoln Continental vehicle ranges of the 1970s. Inspired by the car’s generous long lines, proportions and low clearance chassis, the design of the Lincoln sofa collection is characterised by the same classic elegance and deep proportions. In a nod to the car’s bench seat and various seat arrangements, the Lincoln sofa features a signature wide inner armrest and extensive modularity.

Nest by Adam Goodrum (pictured above left), is a set of two tables that can function nested together or separated individually. Stacked, they create totemic shapes that add interest to any room. Deployed, they cantilever over sofas, beds and chairs, or simply float around a room; a space-saving and flexible alternative to a coffee table.

The NAU collection of furniture is available for purchase from Cult Design.

'MATOPOS’ HOUSE : DESIGN ANTHOLOGY

STUDIO CD DESIGN, INTERIOR STYLINGClaire Delmar

Atelier Andy Carson's renovation of an art patron's home in Sydney's Freshwater, is as far from a stereotypical Australian beach house as you can get. Boasting a world-first exterior clad in curved bronze, the luxurious interiors are a picture of calm and texture, requiring a heavily curated, exceptional collection of adornments.

Architecture by Atelier Andy Carson

"As far as we know, it's the only curved and cast bronze house in the world, probably because the time required is huge and probably prohibitive." Andy Carson, Architect

When billionaire arts Patron Judith Neilson approached Andy Carson to renovate her beach house in Freshwater, New South Wales, he knew he was in for something more experimental than weatherboards and white paint. 'Judith always likes to push boundaries and explore different directions,' says the founder of Atelier Andy Carson. 'Most clients hold you back but Judith pushes you further.'

“The detailing is minimal so as to put the focus on the changing light, the textures and the lushness of the materials.”

PACIFIC HOUSE

Claire Delmar

Alexander & Co.'s Pacific House project has seen a disconnected and unappealing 90s home, reimagined into a contemporary, European-inspired family home, that is firmly anchored within it's striking clifftop setting. With a focus on interesting forms, we injected a palette of rich, earthy colours and natural materials that harmonise with the textural finishes throughout.

"An expressive use of stone combines with warm timber elements, all uniting through a carefully crafted hand, with every tactile and moment of engagement considered." The Local Project

Sydney-based design studio Alexander &CO. draw on a concrete clifftop home’s “invisible charisma” to carve out a new story that reflects the family that lives there. “Substantial in structure but devoid of spirit” is how Alexander &CO. director Jeremy Bull personifies this ’90s clifftop home in Sydney’s East. Admitting the home “wasn’t saying very much” when they first visited the site, Jeremy and his team set out to tell a story that’s both personal and genuine – an exercise that underpins Alexander & CO.’s revered residential design approach.

Recognising its structural clarity and integrity, the Alexander &CO. team proposed a materially-rich evolution for the built form and its surroundings, drawing on the homeowner’s European “Story of Origin”, the dramatic coastal environment and the ebbs and flows of family life. And with this coalescence of place and influence, Jeremy happily admits, “The building is once again breathing and quite alive”.
Est Living

“There is this beautiful sense of the floor being both important, materially valuable, and yet relaxed, worn in, lived upon. It is a thousand trips to the Duomo, worn foot fall crosses the church threshold.” – Jeremy Bull, Alexander & Co.

LO&CO. INTERIORS SHOWROOM

Claire Delmar

The stunning Sydney showroom of fine brass purveyors Lo&Co. is the latest commercial project from architecture firm Alexander & Co. A compact space of only 20sqm, the design seamlessly integrates a bespoke selection of sculptural furniture pieces and lighting which required a highly restrained, tonal styling concept so as not to overwhelm the small space.

Styling by Claire Delmar of Studio CD
Architecture and Interior Design by Alexander & Co.
Photography by Anson Smart

"Lo & Co was a unique project that offered us the chance to play with a compact design challenge. As a practice, we don’t often have the capacity to take on smaller projects so this was an interesting detour from our usual larger-scale work. Our desire was to make the store feel ‘found’, or more importantly to make the brand have historic relevance."
– Jeremy Bull, Alexander & Co.

"We conceived the furniture within this bijou store to have longevity with the ability to be relocated to a future space if required. The timber centrepiece is a development of the pink concrete bench that has become synonymous with Alexander House. Crafted in walnut and possessing a top storage display the shape and expression have naturally changed, however, the bench retains something of the sense of an altar that we had hoped for. Similarly, it holds something of the idea that spaces can have moments of intensity, fulcrums where the energy changes." – Jeremy Bull, Alexander & Co.

AN UNEXPECTED LUXURY COASTAL RETREAT

EDITORIAL STYLING, INTERIOR DESIGNClaire Delmar

With an enviable position perched high above Manly Beach, Cadence & Co.'s reimagining of this neglected beachside home is a far cry from the well-worn coastal designs we're accustomed to. Employing a moody palette of olive greens, walnut and toffee browns and hints of blue, we enhanced each space with unique pieces that both recede and gently contrast with the luxurious furnishings.

Styling by Claire Delmar of Studio CD
Architecture and Interior Design by Cadence & Co.
Photography by The Palm Co. Designs

“The connection between the room’s interior and exterior was integral to our design approach and this is reflected in our choice of palette and materiality. Subtle blues referencing sky, ocean and pool, silvery-greys of olive trees, and the greying weathered timbers of the pool terrace, are all woven into the finishes and fixtures."
Cadence & Co.

With the main living space upstairs already offering commanding views due North along the length of Manly Beach, we wanted to enhance our client's experience of their home by bringing something new, and for this, we focused on the way the room would be enjoyed.

Our idea was to create a second living space dedicated to relaxation and entertaining: a chic lounge bar with full kitchen, integrated banquette dining for eight, relaxed living, and direct outdoor pool terrace access; perfect for long lingering in/outdoor lunches with friends, that could comfortably spill into the evening; or simply laze and graze away a quietly decadent afternoon solo. – Cadence & Co.

A WORKPLACE SANCTUARY BY DANIEL BODDAM

Claire Delmar

This month's Belle magazine features Daniel Boddam's transformation of the utilitarian warehouse space of landscape designers Wyer & Co., into a calming oasis of wellness, that personifies their shared affinity for nature and the Australian landscape. We focused on shape, scale and artisanal materiality to imbue the spaces with a tonal, peaceful aesthetic.

“The result is a quiet and considered interior that harmonises with the Australian landscape and celebrates the artisanal; a testament to simplicity, comfort, calmness and wellbeing."
Daniel Boddam

Harnessing a shared affinity for nature, Daniel Boddam Studio has transformed landscape design practice Wyer & Co’s Botany-based warehouse into a workplace sanctuary awash with verdant landscaping, natural light, sustainable materials and locally crafted furniture. The synergetic pairing has crafted a responsive and nurturing space reflecting the designers’ shared reverence for nature and interest in connecting people to place. Daniel Boddam

“[I love] The simplicity of the design, the tall ceilings and the natural light, which permeates the steel windows. There’s also a generous amount of space, encouraging collaboration between team members of each division without stepping on each other’s toes. It’s a very calm and enjoyable environment to work in.” – Anthony Wyer, Wyer & Co.

MIRROR IMAGE

Claire Delmar

Armed with an enviable 'open brief', SMAC Studio approached the interiors of their remarkable Mirror Image project without creative restraint. Each space has a distinctly 'light' feel that is interspersed with the most exquisite use of coloured natural stone, which we further highlighted with a mix of high contrast and subtle tonal pieces.

“Our projects are typically more restrained in design so that they appeal to a wider market. So when it came time to work on his actual house, my client wanted something remarkable enough to appear in a design magazine, with a distinct European ethos and functionality to cater to his young brood.” – Shona McElroy SMAC Studio

As a unique sculpting of a private residence in Dover Heights, Mirror Image takes inspiration from its residents, conjuring a home of their own desired immersion. Reminiscent in parts of a hospitality or retail venue with its use of colour, the resulting home paves its own path, embedding character and charm whilst remaining conversant as a welcoming home. The balancing of the more saturated areas with the more structured and familiar ensures the functionality of the spaces remain whilst sharing in a sense of identity.
The Local Project

“When it came to furnishing the space, the clients started off quite conservative with their choices, but as we got deeper into the process of designing, they got more excited.”
– Shona McElroy SMAC Studio

MANLY WHARF BAR

INTERIOR STYLINGClaire Delmar

Alexander & Co have stamped their distinctly paired-back aesthetic and passion for sustainable practice on their latest hospitality venue, Manly Wharf Bar. Deftly balancing an enviable collection of Danish furniture classics with industrial touches of exposed brick, chrome and rammed earth, we highlighted the architectural features with contemporary decor in a retro-inspired colour palette.

"MWB is a worn back, worn away, and reclaimed coastal rumpus room — the venue feels part urban loft story, part sexy surfer. A mid-century warehouse above water, an integration of the Manly CBD with the slightest touch of residential DNA.”
– Alexander & Co. design team

Inspired by its sister venue The Burleigh Pavilion on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Manly Wharf Bar has decluttered the iconic Manly location in an effort to de-theme the wharf at large and its many tenancies which have become a themed pastiche over the years. It is a renovation and brand re-positioning of the old Manly Wharf Bar and Bistro within the same tenancy envelope, but with all new doors and windows, as well as exterior finishes and signage. The project spans from the Eastern Sports bar to the Southern Tropic Restaurant with a private dining room and orientates around the central bars and open kitchen with a pizza oven.
Yellowtrace

“Like all our projects, less is more. The purposeful decluttering of the tenancy fit-out is both an aim to return more experience for less work, but as much to reduce or remove the churn of fit-out work and position the business for its next 20 years with only the necessary new furniture and paint required to get it there.”
– Alexander & Co. design team

GREG NATALE'S 'LAGOS' COLLECTION

STUDIO CD DESIGN, INTERIOR STYLINGClaire Delmar

Interior designer Greg Natale is known for producing bold, graphic and luxe interiors and his latest foray into marble sinks and tiles in collaboration with Teranova Tiles, bare all the trademarks of his ubiquitous style. As part of our styling brief, we were tasked with designing a series of geometric, colourful vanities that complement and amplify Greg's dramatic designs in equal measure.

“From seductive curves to fluted edges and bold, geometric shapes my marble basins offer a cool simplicity that allows the inherent allure of the natural marble to take centre stage.”
– Greg Natale.

“This range celebrates the resurgence of patterned tiles in interior design. Contemporary or classic, clean-lined or richly detailed, there’s something here for everyone.”
– Greg Natale.

VOGUE LIVING: SPOTTED GUM HOUSE

Alexander & Co's Spotted Gum House is an exercise in innovative, sustainable and explorative design. Playing with scale, materiality and a tonal, earthy palette, we created seamless connectivity between comfortable liveability and contemporary architecture.

“One of the core precepts of the project was that she [the client] wanted to ‘enjoy’ the process. She chose the team based on what and who would give her a high level of involvement. She wanted it to be unhurried and very careful. She wanted to understand not just the what, but the why — that is pretty uncommon.”
– Jeremy Bull, Alexander & Co.

Launching from the original interwar-era stylings, the expanded home takes cues from the original as it reinterprets the newer elements.

There’s a little homegrown Henry Wilson, a hint of Danish modernism, some quiet Italian elegance and New York illumination in Apparatus fittings.

CLAIRE DELMAR X CHAIRITY 2022

Claire Delmar

Claire is incredibly humbled to be joining some of Australia's most notable creatives, to participate in the fourth edition of Cult and HAY's Chairity Project 2022. With a brief to bravely reimagine HAY's Result Chair, designed by Friso Kramer and Wim Rietveld, around the theme of 'Design The World You Want', Claire has conjured an installation that reflects her role as a stylist and the meditative language between objects and elements that are ever-changing and we're thrilled to finally share her final design with you.

The Chairity Project exhibition has just launched as part of Melbourne Design Week. All designs are available to purchase via online auction with the proceeds going to five very worthy charities. Scroll down for more information.

Photography by Fiona Susanto
Collaboration with ceramic artist Walter Auer

Claire’s signature design aesthetic is distinctly sophisticated, multi-layered and timeless, often featuring bespoke handmade ceramics, for which she has a particular penchant. With this in mind Claire conceptualised and developed her “Chairity” design around the idea of ‘bringing everyone back to the table,’ both in a literal sense (to feed, connect, share and nourish) but also in reference to people ‘bringing something to the table’ in terms of what we can all now do differently, and for the better. The metaphor of a table is universally a place of gathering, so her design intention is to celebrate the simplicity of sharing a meal and tap into the human desire that we all have to be together – while integrating her passion for ceramics. There are several moving components to the installation which reflect Claire's work as a stylist and the interchangeable nature of her work.

Clay was selected as a handmade medium for its sustainable qualities and its ability to be produced ethically, with minimal impact on the environment. Transparency within design (and indeed all industries) and the responsibility we carry to be mindful of our environment is further highlighted with the introduction of the translucent glass jug. The intention here is to suggest that in our creating, there is nowhere to hide. Being eco-conscious should be part of our daily practice.

HOUSE & GARDEN: A BEACHSIDE DREAM HOME

Claire Delmar

Inspired by the natural colour palette in the bush surrounding this expansive beachside home, we sought to imbue every space with an elegant sense of calm, selecting pieces that both complement and amplify the clean lines and natural materials of the interiors.

Interior design by Studio Gorman. Photography by Prue Ruscoe. Styling by Studio CD.

Tucked between Warriewood and Narrabeen on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, tiny Turimetta Beach is one of those spots that only locals know about. To make the most of the glorious site, the owners engaged a building company to design and construct a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home set across three levels with acres of glass that provided unimpeded ocean views. They then turned to Suzanne Gorman of Studio Gorman to create the elevated coastal feel they were after for the interior. “We wanted it to feel homely, welcoming and connected to its surrounds. It had to be environmentally conscious too,” says owner Sarah.

“It’s surrounded by bush and from the inside, it almost feels like you can touch the water, so we opted for a tonal palette and raw, organic materials such as timber and stone to reflect the outlook."
– Suzanne, Studio Gorman

GENOVESE COFFEE HOUSE: A LESSON IN BALANCING MATERIALITY

INTERIOR STYLINGClaire Delmar

Introducing Genovese Coffee House, a project brought to life by architectural studio Alexander & Co. by drawing on the materiality of the industrial building, alongside the Genovese Coffee brand's own history. Our role was to highlight the beauty of the rustic, tactile interiors by exploring the balance between rigid raw materials and softer layers of colour and form, to craft a series of spaces that are both hospitable and luxurious.

Architecture and interior design by Alexander & Co. Photography by Anson Smart. Styling by Studio CD.

In Sydney’s Alexandria, an ex-industrial building enters a new era as Genovese Coffee House, a multifunctional hospitality space infused with Italian charm. Sydney-based interior design studio Alexander & Co. pay tribute to the venue’s rich and storied past while simultaneously situating it firmly in the present. With references to both mid-century design and the site’s industrial heritage, the Coffee House is well on track to becoming a new local favourite.

“THE DESIGN BEHIND THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN SHAPED AS A SPACE TO ENJOY AN HONEST, ITALIAN ESPRESSO COFFEE EXPERIENCE.” – Jeremy Bull

Imagined as a multifunctional space, the Coffee House includes a sit-down cafe, a traditional espresso bar, a cold brew and training bar, the ‘family table’ and various retail displays. You can sip on a macchiato at the espresso bar, grab a breakfast panini in the cafe, or browse Genovese’s range of delicious blends. And if that doesn’t entice you, the space itself certainly will.

“The creative narrative was developed as a result of combining the building’s historic industrial past and location, with a brand positioning which brings Genovese Coffee into Sydney with its first retail offering,” Alexander & Co. director Jeremy Bull says. The shapes, materials and planning of the space were all influenced by the stories and histories of the Genovese family, as well as their ecological and cultural visions of the future. The final design celebrates the life of the building and the life and ongoing legacy of the Genovese family.

The material palette features warm, earthy tones, with accents of burgundy and orange. The atmosphere evoked by these materials is refined yet relaxing; the perfect place to sit and unwind. Moreover, the varying textures – smooth timber, raw linen, course brick – play on the venue’s humble Italian heritage.

VOGUE LIVING: AN ARCHITECT'S CAMP COVE HOME

Claire Delmar

Nick Tobias' 1970s-era Camp Cove home is a contemplative reflection of its relaxed beachside locale. The light and bright interiors evoke an intangible feeling of well-being which we highlighted with beautifully tactile, natural hued pieces, that compliment Nick's impressive and varied Australian art collection.

Article featured in the Nov/Dec Edition of Vogue Living, out now. Architecture by Nick Tobias. Photography by Anson Smart. Styling by Studio CD.

Just a 50-metre stroll from the slim, golden arc of harbourside beach named Camp Cove lies the newly re-imagined home of architect and art connoisseur Nick Tobias. Set on a corner, the open aspect of the two-level house—originally dark brick—was just one feature in a list of appealing traits, which led Tobias to buy the four-bedroom, five-bathroom property at auction a little over 18 months ago.

"I DEFINITELY WANTED SOMETHING LIGHT. LIGHT IN TERMS OF LUMENS, LIGHT IN TERMS OF COLOUR, AND LIGHT ENERGETICALLY. I DIDN’T WANT ANY HEAVINESS—ESPECIALLY IN THE FEEL OF THE SPACE. I WANTED IT TO BE POSITIVE AND I WANTED IT TO FEEL LIKE A HOME, NOT A SORT OF CRAZY DESIGN OBJECT.” – Nick Tobias

Alongside a long-held passion for music — a collection of guitars and a Steinway piano bequeathed by his grandmother are among Tobias’s most treasured possessions — art plays an important role in the architect’s life and his home. His creative streak—first nurtured by his artistic grandmother—was further developed in his early 20s by a close friend who happened to be on the board of the Museum of Contemporary Art [MCA] in Sydney.

Backing onto a park, with two sides facing the street, Tobias saw the property as an opportunity to create a home with a tangible link to local life. While external blinds, internal curtains and lush verdant landscaping by Myles Baldwin help control privacy, Tobias also enjoys the freedom of opening a window on a sunny day to chat with passing friends should the mood take him.

BELLE MAGAZINE: HARBOURVIEW HOUSE MOSMAN

EDITORIAL STYLING, MAGAZINE ARTICLE, INTERIOR STYLINGClaire Delmar

Drawing from the existing home and its European-influenced stylings, Harbourview House exemplifies a contemporary and refined approach. Created by two powerhouse interior design studios, Studio Gestalt and Studio aem, we focused on highlighting the homes bold architectural details through the careful balance of scale and colour with sculptural decor and interesting art pieces.

Article featured in the November Edition of Belle Magazine, out now. Photography by Anson Smart. Styling by Studio CD.

Spread over five generous levels, Harbourview House is a refined embrace of its location overlooking Sydney Harbour. Within the original architecture of Susan Rothwell, the amended interior was re-sculpted to add to the exterior approach anchored to the site and further bring principles of elevated longevity into the interiors. Evolving through the process of engagement, the scope of works expanded from furniture and styling to include the interiors to ensure the home in its entirety felt cohesive and considered as a whole. Rare in its combined size, outlook and location, connecting the resulting home as a representation of that envied position was key. Studio aem and Studio Gestalt bring quality materials and craft together to ensure the continued relevance of the home.

THROUGH A SYMMETRICAL APPROACH, A NATURAL BALANCE IS CREATED, WHERE EACH SPACE FEELS FORMALLY BROUGHT TOGETHER WITH SELECT AND ICONIC FURNITURE, LIGHTING AND ARTWORK CURATED IN PLACE.

Looking further afield, Europe and the effortless means by which the contemporary and the historic are brought together was influential to the direction and principles driving the resolve. Embedding handmade and artisanal features and carefully attuned details throughout while also highlighting those already in place ensures the home feels as though it has existed for many years. Through a symmetrical approach, a natural balance is created, where each space feels formally brought together with select and iconic furniture, lighting and artwork curated in place. Each connecting zone speaks to the personalities of its owners and draws from a celebration of quality design found in Italy.

In proposing a new identity for the home, French herringbone patterned oak flooring is installed throughout, referencing the Haussmann style while also adding an element of animation underfoot. Custom joinery also conceals storage and brings a textured warmth. While the existing French windows and stone fireplaces remain in place and untouched, the new inserted elements aim to sit in a complementary fashion aside them, adding to the home. Curved silhouettes are added to break up the formality of the regular and formal planning, hinting at the movement and circulation within and amongst the rooms internally. The rich layering of textural and tactile leathers, velvets and plush rugs then reinforces a connection to quality and lay the foundations for the chapters to come.
